How to Use the Kaomoji Generator in 3 Steps
Type your message
Write what you want to say. The face is added next to it, so you can leave the box empty if you only want the kaomoji.
Choose a face that matches the feeling
Hug, Flower Smile and In Love are sweet. Cool, Smirk and Lenny are playful. Sad, Worried and Crying show sympathy, and Table Flip adds a dramatic finish.
Copy and paste it into the chat
Click a face to copy it. Paste it into your message and send. If a few characters turn into boxes, choose a simpler face such as Smile or Happy.
Where Kaomoji Come From and How the Generator Uses Them
Japanese internet users began building faces from punctuation, katakana and other symbols decades ago, and they gave the result a name: kaomoji. The idea spread to chat rooms and games all over the world. This kaomoji generator does not draw anything new. It keeps a library of well-known faces and adds the one you choose next to your words, in front, behind or on both sides, depending on how the face is meant to be worn.
Kaomoji by Mood
| Mood | Styles to try | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Happy and warm | Happy, Smile, Joy, Calm, Cheer, Arms Up | Greetings, good news, thank-you messages |
| Sweet and shy | Hug, In Love, Flower Smile, Shy, Gentle, Puppy | Compliments, apologies, friendly sign-offs |
| Cool and playful | Cool, Cool Pair, Smirk, Lenny, Strong, Pointing, Dance | Jokes, banter, gaming chats |
| Upset or tired | Sad, Crying, Worried, Disapproval, Sleepy | Sympathy, tired mornings, mild complaints |
| Big reactions | Table Flip, Rage Flip, Table Restore, Shrug, Wow | Drama, surprise, comic timing |
| Animals and objects | Bear, Cat, Bunny, Coffee | Cute profile lines, pet posts, breakfast messages |
Wearing a Kaomoji the Right Way
- Faces with arms, like Hug or Cheer, work best at the start of a message.
- Reaction faces, like Shrug or Table Flip, sit at the end, as if the speaker has just finished a sentence.
- Sparkle Throw and Cool Pair wrap the text on both sides, which makes them good as a single standalone line.
- One kaomoji per message is plenty. More than that and the face stops reading as a face.
Compatibility and Courtesy
Because the symbols come from many scripts, a kaomoji is more likely to break than plain stars or hearts. Test the more elaborate faces, such as Lenny and Strong, with a friend before using them in a group chat. Think about tone as well: a flipped table is funny between friends and less funny in a message to a customer. If you want something more structured than a face, look at the ASCII Text Generator, which draws entire words with keyboard characters, or try the Cute Font Generator for softer lettering.
Kaomoji Generator FAQ
What does kaomoji mean?
Kaomoji is Japanese for face letters. The name is a mix of kao, face, and moji, character. They are read upright, unlike Western emoticons such as :-) which you tilt your head to read.
Is a kaomoji the same as an emoji?
No. An emoji is a single picture character defined by Unicode, while a kaomoji is a row of ordinary characters arranged to look like a face. Kaomoji do not change colour or style on different phones.
Why does part of my kaomoji look broken?
Kaomoji borrow symbols from Japanese, Greek, Kannada, Canadian syllabics and other scripts. If the font on a device lacks one of them, that part of the face turns into a box or a question mark.
Where can I paste kaomoji?
In any chat, comment or note that accepts plain text. Messaging apps, social networks and forums are all fine. Fields that only allow basic characters, such as many usernames, will reject them.
Which kaomoji are good for a shy or kind message?
Shy, Gentle, Bow, Puppy and Hug are the softest. They suit thank-you notes, apologies and greetings to people you do not know well.
Can I write my own kaomoji?
Yes. Any combination of characters can be a face. Start from one of the faces here, copy it into your notes app and swap pieces such as the eyes or the arms.
