Fancy text is made of special characters, not real fonts. Screen readers may read it badly, so keep it for decoration. Your text never leaves your browser, and the size slider changes the preview only.

How to Use the Fancy Fonts for WhatsApp in 3 Steps

  1. Decide if you need fancy text

For simple bold or italic, try WhatsApp's own formatting first. Use fancy fonts when you want a style the app cannot create, such as cursive or bubble letters.

  2. Type your message and pick a style

Enter your text and preview it in the chat bubble. Monospace, Bold and Italic are easy to read, and the heart frame suits greetings.

  3. Copy and send

Copy the style, open the chat and paste it into the message box. Send a short test to yourself before you post it to a big group.

Two Ways to Style Text in WhatsApp

WhatsApp users have two different routes to styled text, and it helps to keep them apart. The first is the app's own formatting, where special characters around a word tell the app to show it in bold, italic or another effect. The second is copy and paste: text from a font changer is made of Unicode characters that already look styled, so WhatsApp has nothing to interpret and simply shows them.

The built-in route is the better choice when it covers what you want, because the text stays plain underneath and is easier for other people to copy, search and read aloud. The copy and paste route is useful when the app has no matching effect, for instance for cursive, gothic or framed text.

Built-in Formatting vs. Copied Fonts

  • Built-in: works in the places where the app supports it, and keeps the text as normal letters. Put an asterisk on both sides for bold, underscores for italic, tildes for strikethrough and three backticks for monospace. The full list is in the built-in formatting table lower on this page, taken from WhatsApp's Help Center.
  • Copied: works wherever the field accepts normal letters, but the letters are special characters, so search and screen readers treat them as symbols.
  • Mixing them: avoid it. Wrapping copied letters in formatting characters often leads to odd results.

Styles for Chats

  • Monospace is helpful for codes, short lists and anything you want aligned.
  • Strikethrough is handy for jokes and corrected plans.
  • Bold and Sans Italic give emphasis to a word in a longer message.
  • Hearts frames a name for greetings and celebrations.
  • Circled letters work well for a short title or an initial.

Where Else on WhatsApp

People also style the profile name, the "About" line, group names and group descriptions. Each of those fields has its own length limit: WhatsApp's Help Center gives 25 characters for a profile name, 50 characters of text plus an emoji for About and 100 characters for a group name, and the counter next to the tool shows all three. It publishes no rule about which characters the fields accept, so try a short sample before relying on it. The same advice applies to Status text, which may offer its own built-in font choices.

Practical Tips

  • Think about the other person. Your contact sees whatever their device draws. An old phone may show boxes in place of rare symbols.
  • Keep it short. A single styled word beats a styled paragraph, and it takes less space.
  • Use plain text for details. Times, addresses and phone numbers should stay in normal letters.
  • Test in a chat with yourself. Paste the styled text into a private chat to see how it appears before sending it to a group.

To explore a particular look, start with the Bold Text Generator or the Bubble Text Generator. If you also use other apps, see Fancy Fonts for Facebook, and the overview of Social Media Fonts for the complete list.

Where Fancy Text Works on WhatsApp

WhatsApp publishes length limits for names and About, and its own formatting syntax, but no rule on which characters each field accepts. Send a short message to yourself first.

WhatsApp Built-in Formatting

WhatsApp formats text when you put these characters on both sides of it, as described in its Help Center. The same page lists bulleted lists, numbered lists, quotes and inline code, and notes that its newest text formatting is only available on Web and Mac desktop.

Fancy Fonts for WhatsApp FAQ

Why use fancy fonts if WhatsApp already has formatting?

Built-in formatting covers a handful of effects. Fancy fonts add looks the app does not offer, such as cursive, gothic and bubble letters, and the styled text stays the same when you copy it to another app.

Why does built-in formatting sometimes not work?

It depends on the app version and on how the symbols are typed, so a message may stay plain. Check the in-app help for the exact steps for your version.

Can I use fancy text in a WhatsApp group name?

Group names are a separate field with their own rules, so test it with a short styled word before you commit to a long name. If the app refuses it, use the group description instead.

Does styled text survive when I forward a message?

Because fancy text is made of ordinary characters, it normally travels with the message when it is forwarded or copied. The person who receives it still needs a font that can draw those characters.

Does fancy text work in a WhatsApp status?

Status text is a different surface from a chat, so check it with a short test first. If it displays as boxes, switch to a simpler style such as Bold.

Which styles are best for greetings?

Bold for a name, the heart frame for a birthday or anniversary and Italic for a quote. Avoid long sentences in decorative styles, since they are harder to read on a small screen.
